I Corinthians 1:18-31

For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written,

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

What Else Can You Say?

This is the kind of advice that can reduce your holiday stress (note: when talking about stress, I think it is OK to call it “holiday” not “Christmas with a Capital C.” After all, it is the holiday parts causing the stress, not the Christmas parts.) Miss Language took this picture for me without even being asked.

Long-term readers of this blog know that I love Hello Kitty and they know the reason: she has no mouth.

never a sassy word from this kitty

So, Devastatingly Handsome made a point of showing me this news article about how Hello Kitty is being used to fight crime in Thailand. Sick, isn’t it? But I wonder what I have to do to get one of those masks…

An (Apparently) Alarming Alarm

Try as I may, I’m not sure what this notice (shared by Engrish.com) is supposed to mean.

Maybe I should run it through a translator. Here, I have run it through  The Dialectizer set to Swedish Chef:

It esks fur it tu zee coostumers. Um gesh dee bork, bork! Iff yuoo hefe-a rentel feedeu, CD und cellooler phune-a, zee boorgler elerm is leekely tu vurk vhee yuoo cume-a und oooot. Um de hur de hur de hur. Thuoogh, I em reelly surry, it sumeteemes lets me-a du zee cunffurmeshun ooff yuoor beggege-a et thet teeme-a. It esks fur yuoor cuupereshun, pleese-a.

and here it is on Cockney (I think the most comprehensible):

It asks for it ter the customers. Right. If yer ‘ave rental video, right, CD and cellular dog and bone, the burglar alarm is likely ter work wen yer come and out. Fough, I’m right sorry, right, it sometimes lets me do the chuffin’ confirmation of yor baggage at that time, do wot guvnor! It asks for yor cooperation, please.

I am skipping the Elmer Fudd and Pig Latin versions.  :)
