Genesis 2:19-20 says ”Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.  The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field.”

Working with Miss Dog Lover and Mr Music requires almost continuous Mom-presence, if I want them to get anything done. (In fact, I often reflect my life would be so much easier if I just did their work myself, but somehow, that seems to be missing the point.) So, as I oversee their every addition fact, spelling word, and page read, I have plenty of time to ponder but not much brain left with which to ponder. Which leads to most of these rambling entries.

Names-of-Christ-Posters

Anywho, lately I’ve been thinking about this job of naming. It surprises me that Genesis uses the past tense on the job. Isn’t that most of what education and man’s task still is? I have not been beyond the confines of calculus in math, but as far as I’ve gone, nothing is more than finding other names for increasingly complex equations ~ and, at least in the texts, a surprisingly large percentage turn out to be other names for zero, one, or infinity. In literature, music, or any other type of art, it seems the intent is to rename something so we can understand it based on shared experiences. Most of history or science (again, as far as I’ve gone) is naming what is there and how it fits together with other named parts.

And, I still need a name for my sock monkey.
