Dominion and Food Names September 3, 2007

Today we happily have a Labor Day picnic to attend, of course, due to my little obsession with 5-day weeks, after school.

We will be taking egg boats, fruit kabobs, peppermint frozen yogurt, cake, and iced tea. “Egg boats” are what people who have not raised a Miss Language commonly refer to as “devilled eggs.” Miss Language, in her toddlerdom, did not feel Good People should be eating something with a wicked name, so for awhile little paper sails on toothpick masts were added. Those were done away with but the new name stuck. That is part of taking dominion, one ova at a time. (Don’t worry, I was bright enough to just serve Chocolate Cake.)

The fruit kabobs are what I want to make. But not so much because they’re yummy or because they’re fun to eat ~ just because the word “kabob” is so cool. I asked dictionary.com for its derivation and dictionary says “Origin: 1665–75; < Ar, Hindi kabāb < Turk kebap roast meat” so isn’t that fun, fruit kabobs are not roast nor are they meat but I can still call them by this Hindi name. (Bonus info: the shish- part on shish-kebab, according to dictionary, is Turkish for Turk şişkebabι, equiv. to şiş spit. I will keep that info from Mr Music who would only be interested in a less-appetizing meaning of “spit.”)

And the peppermint frozen yogurt? Well, that is going to be sheerly experimental. We used to have a strawberry frozen yogurt recipe which was lost when A Great Dampness struck the basement and so I am taking a recipe I found on the net for frozen blueberry yogurt and instead of blueberries, crushing candy canes into it. We are fans of peppermint ice cream but my recipe is awfully rich, so time to experiment.

Verdict now in on the frozen yogurt: Miss Language told me in the future to stick with the real, heavy cream recipe. Direct quote “Why mess with perfection?”
