I have a hypothesis that English is not in fact her first language but we are at a loss to know what is. We’ve tried her out on Greek, Latin, a bit of Mandarin, Spanish, French, Sign Language, and so far none of them seem to ring a bell for her either. Maybe she does not have a first language or maybe it is some obscure language particular to girls who love dogs and fixing their hair just so.
Yesterday I had the new Newsboys CD Go in the boombox. I don’t usually go for many decibels but somehow you just can’t play that rap number, “Your Love is Better than Life” on low. But it was too much for Miss Dog Lover, who said to me, in her typical not-a-native-speaker way, “Please minus the volume.” I minused it as soon as the phrase had translated in my brain
