supposedly better in glass

I post on a board where the subject of peanuts in Coke came up. I have never heard of that so asked how it is done. Here’s the reply I got:

You need a small coke in a glass bottle and a small bag of salted peanuts. You know, the kind you can find by the nabs in a jr food mart (or whatever you call your gas stores). Put a few peanuts in your bottle (the salt will make the coke fizz) and you are ready for a REAL TREAT!!!!!!!! There is just something about mixing those salty nuts with a sweet coke that is out of this world!!! You can drink it one of two ways. You can sip your coke, just opening your lips enough for the cokes and not the peanuts, or you can open up wide enough to get some of the nuts. YUM!!!!!!!! Keep adding peaunuts as you drink your coke down. It is GOOD I tell you, GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have never met anyone who didn’t like it, although I do know some people who used bottled root beer instead of coke. That was not my taste, but I don’t like root beer very much anyway.

Now, I had to admit I don’t know what “nabs” are, either.

Then another Mom added this advice (I am leaving out the side threads about calculus, a supposed resemblance of Dr Pepper to “carbonated prune juice,” Darth Vader, the perseverance of the Irish in battle, and boiled peanuts):

Let’s make this even more interesting…… have you ever tried peanuts in Dr. Pepper? I remember doing the peanuts in soda thing when I was little. I would go to the laundramat with my Grandma and she would buy me this treat….. Happy memories!

start out with baby steps… do the Coke first. Just know that there is a whole new world about to open up to you…. Coke, Dr. Pepper, then Mt. Dew…….. oh, the varieties!!!!!!!!!

Addressing the unfamiliarity with the term “nabs”…

Nabs–as every refined, sophisticated homemaker knows–are snacks. Anything that is not “real” food is a nab. Potato chips are nabs, cheese crackers are nabs, honeybuns are nabs.

Now…there are degrees of nabs. If one is in need of a little something to stave away the hunger until mealtime, this may be sufficient…

But for the serious pang, you MUST have this…

followed by this…

Now those are NABS!

I hope I was able to clear this up a little for you. Remember…take baby steps at first. The fine art of becoming acclimated to Southern ways takes time. Rome (or Bugtustle, MS population 1003) wasn’t built in a day.

I have to wonder if “nabs” is short for Nabisco.

nabs??

I am going to have to get to the store and buy some peanuts and Coke, if I can find glass bottles. Devastatingly Handsome will think I’ve gone off the deep end. But this is educational, right? Right??
